Phonetic visual-verbal associative method for teaching English professional medical vocabulary in a medical university in the context of increasing digitalization of education

Abstract

The aim of this study is to demonstrate higher efficacy of the phonetic visual verbal associative method (PVVAM) of memorizing English vocabulary by first-year medical students, compared to the rote learning method. In the paper the definition of the phonetic visual verbal associative method has been suggested, the possibility of its use for memorizing new terms by medical students has been methodically substantiated, the algorithm of the PVVAM has been worked out, the specific features of phonetic associations, such as the language the associative word comes from (Russian or English) as well as the degree of phonetic similarity between this word and the term being studied, have been analyzed, the effectiveness of the PVVAM has been determined. The scientific novelty of the study is determined by the integrated approach to learning professional terminology combining sound, verbal and visual formats with an emphasis on associative perception of information. It has been found that the application of the phonetic visual verbal associative method significantly improves memorization of professional terminology by students and reveals their creative potential. The experiment has demonstrated that the more pronunciation of the associative word matched that of the term to learn (80-100% sound similarity), the better this term was memorized. To memorize six new medical terms, three previously learned English words, two Russian ones and two words of English origin assimilated into the Russian language were used. Being difficult to remember, the term “viscera” was divided into two parts with associations presented for each.
