Using National Gallery of Art website materials in English language instruction for art students

Abstract

The research aims to substantiate the possibilities of using materials from the online resource of the U.S. National Gallery of Art (NGA) in the process of teaching English to art students. The article examines the methodological principles of integrating museum digital content into the educational process; it analyzes sections of the NGA website: English Language Learning (ELL) materials, interactive galleries (virtual exhibition spaces where users can explore museum collections online, comparing visual and textual materials), and educational series (thematic selections of multimedia lessons aimed at mastering historical and cultural context and developing students’ intercultural competence); and describes forms of their application in the Foreign Language course at an art university. The scientific novelty of the work lies in determining the didactic potential of museum online content as a means of developing professionally-oriented foreign language communicative competence for students in creative fields and in developing recommendations for its use in teaching English to art students. Examples of tasks based on the museum’s art collections (description of works, written reflections, oral discussions) are proposed, and it is demonstrated how they can be integrated into the educational process to develop students’ linguistic competence, aesthetic perception, and professional vocabulary.
