Teaching prosodic means of expressing empathy in the training of future English teachers

Abstract

The study aims to theoretically substantiate and develop a system of exercises for pre‑service English teachers on the use of prosodic means to express a component of emotional intelligence – empathy – in professional‑pedagogical communication. The article outlines the need to cultivate emotional intelligence within professional teacher education and examines the intercorrelations among the concepts of “emotional intelligence”, “empathy”, and “emotive competence”. The scientific novelty lies in the proposal, for the first time, of a modular exercise system designed specifically for future English teachers that fosters the deliberate use of prosody as a tool of emotional influence in foreign‑language pedagogical discourse. The study identifies the main interference errors made by Russian‑speaking students and provides recommendations for organizing effective work on the phonetic aspect of trainee teachers’ speech, thereby enabling the formation of emotive competence in conjunction with phonetic competence.
